Another Great Board add on for Talisman May 28, 2010
By Glen Hubbard At the time I am writing this there is only one review for this expansion and it is rather negative. I disagree with that view, so I thought I would add my own since I have written several Talisman reviews. I admit I am biased, as I love the game, but I think the previous poster may have had the wrong mind set.
All the pieces, board, cards, character cards, and figures are of the standard Very high quality produced by FFG for the Talisman line.
This is a very similar expansion in design and concept to the Dungeon Expansion. Basically it is a new board/region you can enter and traverse. It has its own cards and end boss. It is NOT the Dungeon Expansion, nor should it be thought to be. This board expansion attaches to the main Talisman board on the opposite corner to the Dungeon. This makes for a VERY large playing space. You may need one table for the board and smaller tv tables for the playes!
Similar to Dungeon the goal of this expansion is to get the the end of the board, defeat the boss and gain a magic relic. Then you complete the game as per usual. People complain that the magic relics at the end of this game are too weak, but the boss at the end of the game is only 66% as strong as the dungeon boss, so this fits. (The Dungeon Boss has a strength/craft of 12/12, the Eagle King has an 8/8) Also, there are only 4 relics to gain after defeating the boss, I admit there could have been more.
The adventure cards for Highland look similar to the standard set. They have added a new concept called "trinkets" which do not count against your number of items carried. Most seem to be traded for some benefit, gold, life, str, etc. A good addition to the game, although they do seem to be heavily gold oriented.
There are six new characters with the game, most have been reviewed on the FFG web site. At least 2 of them are exceptional; Vampiress and Alchemist.
There are three new alternate ending cards. They are all intended to be hidden, and are all good variations. I LOVE Alternate ending cards. to me Talisman is not Talisman unless you don't know what will happen at the end of the game. I feel there could have be more alternate ending cards included, and this is my one disapointment (Hence the 4 stars). Hopefully in the next expansion they will add 3 more new ones and they will throw in the few alternates they have published on the FFG site. It would be nice to have professionally printed copies of them.
Anyway, this expansion adds a new board region for the player to travel to. There are new cards, and some of the monsters are as strong as the end boss. It may not appear be as high levelled as the Dungeon expansion when you compare monsters and treasure, but this is still a good expansion. You could go into the Highlands to prepare for the Dungeon for example. Not everyone is ready to go in to the Dungeon knowing that the end boss is such a beast. The highland is easier, though the rewards are smaller. I like this expansion. I hope they make more soon.
WARNING: Playing Talisman with all expansions requires a big, BIG Table!

Another toy for the obsessed masses Jan 07, 2011
By Triple O Enterprises Let me qualify this review by stating first it is far from impartial. I have been a rabid follower of talisman, and in fact most similar products, for well over half my life. the closest I can provide to impartiality is an assessment of the product in relation to other expansions and versions which preceded it.
The Board- Serves it's purpose well, though not as visually striking as the dungeon corner board. Of particular note are several spaces which seem to be lower-level analogues of dungeon-y spaces focused on random movement and such. Special frustration is still reserved for the forgotten city space, which can actually issue you a talisman (or even relic) as a result of a random die roll...anyone who has rolled there eyes at the lucky son of a...who pulled a talisman out of their ass (or the adventure card stack), will be truly thrilled at watching their opponent cash in on the purest of luck-but I digress. simply put the board is adequate, functional, and pretty much as expected in the quality department (to this day the only portions of my collection showing undue wear are the old black industries components) Total-4/5
The Characters- These run the typical talisman range from grossly overpowered to utterly useless, with a few flavors in between. Already the vampiress and alchemist cause uncomfortable shuffling in the group, while the concept of a leprechaun/pixie death match strikes me as one of the longest evenings in talisman history. in truth there's not a whole lot of new mechanic here, even the severely O.P. alchemist is little more than the city space ported onto a character card. the glaring exception to this is the high entertainment value to be had in the highlander character coupled with the battle royal alt. ending card, or as we like to call it, "there can be only one" mode. Total-3/5
The Cards- In my opinion this is where the highlands starts to come into its own as an expansion. the introduction of trinkets (marginal items which do not apply to your carry limit) is a fabulous idea, and one that I hope sees more fleshing out in future releases, if for no other reason to broaden their use (most are simple turn in at x square for x gold affairs). Also on the list of new favs is the mindwipe (or something to that effect) spell. essentially a spell-jacker for that cocky bastid across the table who keeps pawing their spell cards with a "just can't wait" look on their face. Nothing induces the dreaded rage-quit like master stroking someone's master stroke-good fun. Total-4.5/5
Overall- Honestly if you already own the talisman core set and any of the expansions, you're probably not reading this because buying everything talisman is one of your little no-brainers (we should start a club or something), but if you are on the fence, or only own the core set and are looking to determine where to begin your expansion I will give you this to consider- *If you're looking for a drastic change in game play dynamic, the reaper expansion might be for you instead, it adds a whole new pvp element that can become quite engrossing (you'll actually enjoy rolling a 1-that is until the reaper gives your worthy opponent a box of chocolates and kicks you in the junk) *If you want to grow your board and aren't as in to the marathon sessions as some, this might be your guy, as by-and-large the challenges in the highlands are less, well-fatal- than those in the dungeon.
the fact of the matter is, though, if you enjoy (or are even familiar with) talisman enough to be reading a review of one of it's products, acquiring the highlands will make for a red-letter day. it is, after all, another piece of the realm. (and should hold us over untill the forest, city and dragon tower are released...tap foot, check watch, roll eyes, lay down for a nap and a bowl of rocky road...)
Happy gaming, all and forgive my verbose rambling!!!

Great addition to Talisman Oct 03, 2010
By Blackalliance There's already a great in depth review of The Highland, so I'll skip another long read. If you're looking for a great expansion for Talisman, I highly recommend The Highland. I probably spend half my time in The Highlands every time we play trying to get the magic objects, weapons, etc. that are in the adventure deck. The monsters are not extemely hard compared to The Dungeon board so you can enter as soon as the game starts.
So add some fun to your game and get it, it's that simple!

Excellent Expansion Oct 01, 2010
By Michael Shaeffer Great expansion. Much needed spells and new monster cards. Make sure you have the room when getting the expansions b/c the board is big and adding in the expansion greatly increases the size. I'm waiting to for the last corner of the board to come out that way I can have it framed and will be able to hang it on the wall and take it down when the wife and kids wish to play it.

Great Expansion! Jun 24, 2010
By Commissar Petrov
"Book Tsar"
The Highlands Expansion provides an exciting new adventure to the already powerful game of Talisman. I was suprised at the variety of adventure cards available in the new add-on and was extremely pleased to find that it did not conflict with the Dungeon Expansion, in that one can begin their adventure early-on in the Highlands and then move on to the Dungeon later. The only great disappointment was the Relic cards, whose abilities were onerous and frankly not too helpful unless you plan on fighting a Battle Royale at the end. One of the big bonuses to the Highlands was the ability to loiter in the expansion area without having to declare a retreat or only advance one way, allowing for mobility and player vs. player challenges on the death-defying craigs and walkways which plague the Highlands.
This expansion is a must-have for any hardcore or leisure Talisman adventurer and I would strongly recommend picking it up as soon as possible. (The character additions are awesome as well!)
