FFGTM08 The Dragon Talisman by Fantasy Flight Games

Playing with The Dragon expansion for Talisman, players will encounter even more choices and strategic challenges, including a new, dual-sided Inner Region for their heroes to conquer. The alternate sides allow players to face familiar terrain along a path that requires all new tactics, or to venture into the Dragon Tower, where a heros every step meets opposition by the Dragon Kings minions and leads him ever closer to an ultimate confrontation with the Dragon King, himself.

The Dragon brings to life six new characters to confront the draconic challenges that lie ahead. Over 300 new tokens and cards expand the Draconic Lords influence over the land of Talisman and weave each Draconic Lords story. New rules pace the increase of the draconic threat, and the heroes quests become more and more dangerous as the dragons grow stronger. Now, for those brave adventurers who seek the Crown of Command, the quest means more than power and influence. It is a race to save the land from the Dragon Kings tyrannical rule. Any hero who dares confront the Dragon King must be prepared for an epic battle!

4Great expansion for Talisman with Caveats  Oct 08, 2011 By Marc Quattromani
Unlike the the other Talisman expansions, this game alters the fundamental game play, overall for the better.

The change is not the addition of a new region, like the Highlands and Dungeon expansions, where for the most part the next gameplay consists of an extra side region that you can explore. There is a new board but it replaces the center region and therefore affects just the end play. The Dragon expansion instead adds the concept of a dragon king and dragon card decks that eventually become the dominant thing you interact with as the game progresses.

The game play is altered by the dragon cards, mostly because the new characters are powerful and the new dragon cards, once any character gains a little power, are the most important things to go after. For my group, this means there is little reason to go to the highlands or dungeon and we don't play with those expansions when using the dragon one. On the otherhand, with the greater power in the dragon cards and faster power-ups due to being able to kill more potent foes, the game progresses more quickly and that isn't a bad thing. We find that with the Dragon expansion we can get to a real ending about twice as fast as before which in practical matters means we now have per-the-rules winner rather than calling a winner.

I think the new characters are somewhat overpowered compared to most of the old characters of any expansion (on the other hand, they are just on par, not stronger than the strongest of the other characters). Some of the new characters have rules ambiguities that should have been addressed in game play (for example, the minotaur can charge and add his movement die to his battle attack roll. What happens if he is using a riding horse? Is it both die, his choice of die? Arguably neither die since he can't charge from a riding horse?) Several of the new characters are a lot less interesting if you are only taking the characters from the expansion and not using the dragon lords and dragon cards. So if you are thinking of buying this mostly for the characters, you will find the dragon rider a lot less interesting and the dragon priestess very weak.

The end game has always been Talisman's weakness in my opinion, despite valiant efforts over the various expanions for offering different options. This game actually adds an end mechanism that is nicely integrated into the rest of the game and our favorite of all the endings.

My first impressions were negative because this expansion makes the highland and dungeon expansions pointless but after more play, I think it is one of the better expansions. The new game play is crisper, the dragon imagery is fun, the new characters are good. We enjoy the faster player and can actually contemplate 2 games of Talisman in an evening instead of just one.

You get:
* 3 dragon lords and a deck of cards for each. Each dragon lord and his cards has a clear personality and theme. There are now lots of craft dragons to deal with so dragon killing isn't just for the brawny characters.
* 6 new characters,5 of which are quite interesting and strong. The 6th (dragon priestess) is more of a mixed bag but still playable.
* new inner region board with 2 sides, each providing a different end game
* a bunch of dragon scale tokesn (players draw one each turn, determining the current dragon king and where you can pick dragon cards on the board)
* dragon sleep tokens which can put dragons and monsters to sleep, making them easier to kill

In summary, this expansion will make the game play differently. Other expansions might add a differently themed area with some more adventure card types, this one removes the value of these other region expansions and changes the feel of the game. If you like your dungeon and highlands, I'm not sure I'd get this expansion. But if you want something different and don't mind playing with one or the other, then it is great.

5Excellent Expansion  Jan 31, 2012 By Kevin
I think this expansion adds needed elements to the end game. My sons and I enjoy playing it. We quite enjoy the new characters as well as the dragon cards.

4Great Expansion  Jan 24, 2012 By johnhe0414
If you enjoy Talisman - you may want to look at this expansion. I have purchased all but one of the expansions and I really enjoy the Dragon expansion additions to the game.

5Great Gift  Jan 04, 2012 By David Wilson
We have the entire Talisman set, and this expansion was very fun to add in with the rest. This particular order took a while longer to ship than originally expressed, but when it did ship it was here in about two days, was in excellent condition, and still plastic-wrapped.

5Best Board Game  Apr 20, 2012 By Sphen424
This is one more piece of the best board game ever created. The dragon figure is very cool and hopefully creators still come out with the actual towers vs just cards and board piece to sit in the middle
