Fun for students! Jul 13, 2010
By Jodi I bought this game for my classroom as a last day of school activity. The kids had fun playing it, and couldn't stop laughing for the most part. :-)
This game would get boring if played for too long. If it is going to be played by different people, it is a good buy. If you are planning on buying it for two people to play over and over again, it might get boring.

Good travel game Oct 02, 2009

This version of Scattergories is similar to ASAP, a game that came out in the 90s. This version is easier to carry around and doesn't involve writing. You don't need pencils and you don't have to get those pads that come with the other version. This version is good to play in the car with the kids which makes it a good travel game.

Portable Scattergories - great idea! Nov 13, 2011
By Katharine Hyde I host a monthly game night and also do a lot of camping, so I like to have a wide variety of games available, but don't like having large game boxes to store or take with me when I camp. I also like games that are the quick play type, esp. if kids are playing. This is a good substitute for the regular Scattergories game that doesn't require any writing or that annoying timer ticking away. There's an "I Know" card that is placed in the middle of the table along with a deck of subject cards and a deck of letter cards in a handy tray. To start the game a subject card and letter card are flipped over. The first person who slaps the card, says "I know" and gives an immediate and acceptable answer takes one of the two cards and another card is flipped over, so either the subject stays the same or the letter stays the same until someone eventually takes that card. Once one of the two decks is finished, each player counts his/her cards and the one with the most cards wins. Simple.
I like that it has a tray to keep the subject and letter cards separate. With regard to my ranking of "durability" I gave it an OK rating, but I did that with the idea that kids often lose cards or otherwise mess them up. If adults are the primary users of this game I'd give it a higher rating. It's not really educational as much as it requires quick thinking. To make it fair, it's probably a game that's best played by all kids or all adults (say age 16 and up) so the playing field is more equitable.
Overall, it's a fun, portable, easy and quick game to play that anyone over the age of 10 or so could enjoy. I agree with another reviewer who noted that if only 2 people are playing this game frequently it could get a bit repetitve over time, but if 4 or more people are playing it a few times a year it's a lot of fun.

Fun and flexible May 06, 2011

I bought this game for my grandchildren and ended up keeping it for my students at school. I am a speech therapist and found lots of ways the cards can be used for language activities. Instead of the frantic "slap the card first" format, we deal out several letter cards to each person and award them points for each letter they can match to the category (within a time limit). With very young children, you can use most of the categories but skip the letter cards. I have used this game with kids from 4 to 14 and it never gets old. My colleagues and I like the game so much I just ordered 3 more copies as gifts!

Nothing Like the Actual Game - Too Unorganized Jan 06, 2012
By Bonjour Poetry Reviews I really like Scattegories, but I can't say I enjoyed this one very much. It's a card game where you have one pile with cards that contain a single letter, and another pile with cards that contain a category. You have to say "I know" and then put your hand on the table and shout out your answer. There's no writing or list making like in the regular game.
There was a little bit too much shouting and slapping hands on the table for my taste! It got very loud and rowdy, so if you have quite a few players things can get crazy. But you might like it! It wasn't for me, but I'm more introverted and couldn't take the screaming and hand slapping. LOL!
