2Totally unneccesary  Feb 16, 2011 By Jorge Ruben
Marvel Minimates Wave 29 continues with a Wolverine and Hydra agent two-pack. The Wolverine included in this version is the X-Force version, basically a repaint of the old brown and orange costume into the newer (translation: grittier) black and gray duds. The only thing I can say about this figure is: Was it really necessary? This is the umpteenth version of Wolverine available, as well as being the SECOND version of Wolverine in this costume. Yes, this version also comes included in the Uncanny X-Force boxset. And it looks far more effective in that boxset, with a far more serious look on his face. This one comes with what appears to be a mischievous grin, and it destroys the figure completely. Wolverine doesn't smile. He is an angry killing machine. It looks like the Hydra agent busted out a joke while they were sitting there. Horrible.

The Hydra soldier is a far more effective figure. Similar to the AIM Soldier and S.H.I.E.L.D. soldier, this is basically an army-builder. After all, the Avengers can't very well save the world without an army of Hydra soldiers trying to stop them. The Hydra agent comes with a bulky dark and light-green chest-piece that is removable to reveal... a dark and light-green chest underneath. Alrighty then. The helmet is also removable to reveal... well, basically the same face underneath. He DOES come with a set of night vision goggles, which fit over both the helmet piece and the head underneath. An assault rifle, handgun, and pair of non-gauntlet hands complete the ensemble. Maybe it's not the most exciting figure out there, what with basically a carbon copy of the figure underneath all the removable stuff, but like I said earlier, he is basically an army builder and can be mixed and matched to make (slightly) different versions.

With this set, Art Asylum is basically scraping the bottom of the barrel. I get the logic: Iron Man, Spider-Man and Wolverine are by far the most popular Marvel licenses, therefore they will always get multiple releases. Which is fine. But with this set, you get a Wolverine that is done far better as part of a boxset, which is odd since boxsets tend to usually cut corners on the figures a bit (think quantity over quality). Additionally, the claws included with this Wolverine are a mess, reminiscent of the shoddy claws included in the earlier waves. They are made of a softer plastic than the excellent "Wolverine: Origins" figures, and came out of the packaging horribly warped and askew. This Wolverine couldn't stab someone with these claws if he tried. The paint job on the figure is also underwhelming. Overall, the only reason worth getting this set is for the Hydra agent. Otherwise, there are a LOT of other Wolverine figures available in Minimates that are superior to this disaster.
