5Great capstone for the Scars of mirrodin block  Feb 07, 2012 By R. Newnham
I have to say I regret not buying more of the New Phyrexia set; most of my exposure has been purchasing singles from the secondary market. But I must say that this is a great capstone to the Scars of Mirrodin block. I am particularly fond of both the Mirrodin- and Phyrexian-themed cards, and draw deeply from those when deckbuilding.

The new mechanic for this set were Phyrexian Mana and Living Weapon. This is a good example of mechanics matching theme. To represent the "desperate last days" of Mirrodin and the "sacrifice for power" theme of the Phyrexians, some cards cost Phyrexian Mana, which can be paid with the appropriate color, or with 2 life each. It's sort of a "Faustian bargain" or an act of desperation. This really meshes well with the storyline, and I appreciate seeing theme motivate mechanics. The Living Weapon keyword for equipment is also pretty spiffy. These are equipment that are automatically attached to a 0/0 Black Germ creature token upon entering the battlefield.

Wizards of the Coast kind of put it out there that this set might have been called Mirrodin Pure, indicating that the Mirrans had won the war. There was a bit of hype on that, but I am glad that they went with New Phyrexia. The mechanics are great, and I am really liking having some of these cards in my latest deck.

4Small Set With Nice Art  Jul 04, 2011 By Packer Fan
Nice art, but a pretty small set, so I would recommend splitting a booster box with a friend because the variety is pretty small if you open thirty six packs alone. Though, you get quite a few mythic rares.

5Better than Christmas (or equal assuming one of my gifts was a booster box)  Apr 01, 2012 By Benjamin H. Horrocks
Two or three times a year I allow myself to splurge on a booster box. It is a time filled with emotion- anticipation, anxiety, excitement, happiness. As soon as my booster box ships I bookmark the tracking page and then proceed in making it my mission to wear out my F5 button. When the day comes that the tracking information reads "out for delivery" I cancel my plans and/or take the day of work and wait... as patiently as I can wait which involves a lot of pacing and looking out the window waiting for the appropriate delivery vehicle to arrive. Then the moment I am waiting for actually happens. My heat rate increases and my blood pressure rises. My hands tremble in anticipation as I open the door to greet the delivery person. We exchange culturally acceptable pleasantries and then the package is finally placed into my hands. I dash to my desk that has already been cleared except for a pair of scissors. I open the shipping package, then the booster box itself, and finally snip the top off of each of the 36 wonderful booster packs. I remove the rest of the wrapping from each pack and stack them in stacks containing six booster packs each. Then I organize. I divide first by color, then by rarity, then by card type. The next four hours are some of the best of my life, creating a spread sheet with my favorite new cards for potential decks grouped by their prospective strategy. It is the closest I have come to pure joy without the help of illicit drugs.

Future Employers: I do not use illicit drugs. I only included this reference as I feel it will resonate well with those who do enjoy the recreational use of illicit drugs. Once again, I do not use illicit drugs.

5Christmas Came Early!  Nov 22, 2011 By Brent
If you are a fan, this is the way to go. Don't waste your money on starter decks, just grab one of these from the get-go and revel at the ease with which you can acquire desired cards through trades. I am very glad I bought this (but then again, I play a lot and like to make new decks often, so I need the variety) and recommend it to any player. The only downside to this is the time it takes to open and organize all of the cards!

4Great expansion - lots of new flavor mechanics  Aug 29, 2011 By J. Chen "speedyjjc99"
Great expansion in the most recent released block. Several new mechanics along with some inventive new cards as well. The inclusion of Phyrexian mana makes these cards much more flexible for splashing in whatever deck you decide to play.
