Pretty good game Aug 26, 2010
By Georgia Mom My 8 year old got this for his birthday along with Minotaurus. He had a great time putting this together but when it came to playing it there was alot of frustration with understanding the rules. I thought surely he was kidding so both my husband and myself read the rules and we couldn't understand them very well either. Considering we both have MBAs and are at least somewhat intelligent I could see why an 8 year old kid would have trouble. Still not to be deterred I went on-line and we all watched the video for how to play the game (thank goodness Lego thought of doing this). This made it a lot easier to understand. Now that we have a general understanding of how to play it is very fun and has become a big hit. Even my 5 year old has caught on. So I gave it an overall 4 only because of the difficulty understanding the rules to start. I am very pleased that Lego has a website dedicated to showing how to play the games for those of us who have difficulty undestanding the rules the way they were written.

Good for the Lego Scrap Pile Dec 07, 2010

I had about six cubic feet of Lego from my childhood I gave to my son. He has added tons more to that. We loved Minotaurus at his cousin's house and he was excited to get this game for his birthday. It was terrifically fun to build. That throat-clearing out of the way, the game itself is terrible. The set-up, mid-game and end-game are each themselves ambiguous. Together, they are all but unfathomable. I'm a regulatory lawyer and a gamer. I was playing Avalon Hill's Rise and Decline of the Third Reich at age 9. I can make sense of Advanced Squad Leader's fire-for-effect rules. This was completely opaque for game play purposes. I've made up a couple of rules of my own to use the set, but it's slowly being assimilated into the Lego Collective in my sons room. There are cheaper ways to buy parts.
Lego has some good games. This is not one of them.

Thank you Lego! Oct 29, 2011
By Brent This was a blast to put together! Minotarus is great too. Personally, I say don't bother reading the game instructions. (I think you have to have a Phd. to understand them). Check out the Lego web-site for the VIDEO! We did that, wrote our own rules out in a way we could understand, and have had a lot of fun with this since. Initially I was mad they had made the directions so vague. The video made it SO EASY! Great game. Great family time. Educational and durable. I wavered between 4 & 5 stars, the video made it a 5 for me. Just like ANY new game, learning how to play it is confusing at first. sent an email to Lego and told them to fix the directions and thanking them for the video! :-

Difficult rules & Just ok Sep 04, 2010

We bought this for our new family game for our vaction, to play at night, or rainy days. (Good thing it didn't rain!) The directions are quite confusing, and the game is sort of monotnous. My son(10) enjoyed building it... but we didn't think it was much fun. I read the other review and it mentioned Lego "how to play" video and I thought I should check it out to see if we were playing it wrong. Well, we weren't so, for the cost I would look for something else. I am sure my son will use the parts to create an adventure!

Not really worth the money Dec 27, 2010
By Rick Sanders I got this game, along with the Lego Minotaurus and Lego Harry Potter games, for my kids for Christmas. The other two games are good, but this one isn't worth the price of admission.
The first thing is the directions. I agree with others who say they are difficult to interpret. The directions aren't laid out in a clear manner, making it difficult to understand, and there are several points not made clear at all. We ended up having to add a rule or two of our own to 'fill in the gaps' where some particular point isn't addressed by the directions. It works, but it isn't much fun getting it to that point.
The second thing is the gameplay itself. Again, I have to agree with another reviewer who said it's rather monotonous. Once you've got the directions figured out and know what to do, the game works as intended, but it gets boring pretty quick. Once the players have their little character pieces on the pyramid, it quickly turns into nothing more than round after round of rotating the pyramid and trying to get up the steps. And this part of the game can drag on. The other Lego games I mentioned are similar in this aspect, in that you move parts around to make things more difficult for your opponents and easier for yourself. But with those games, this process works differently, allows for more differences and results in the changes, and isn't so monotonous. Maybe this is simply a matter of perception, or even patience, that will vary from one person to the next. For me, it got boring pretty quick and I couldn't wait for it to end.
There is one aspect of gameplay that really exercises your memory. You must keep track of hidden objects as they get moved around the board (they're covered up so you can't see them, requiring you to keep track of which is which in your mind). This may be a good 'mental exercise' for kids as it encourages them to focus and keep track of things. But for me, it's not enough of a plus to overcome the repetitive nature of the game.
The Eqyptian theme of the game is kind of cool. But all things considered, with the vague directions making it difficult to get started and the boring gameplay getting worse the more you play it, this game will be a dust collector in my closet. The other two games I mentioned are better, but if I could do things over again knowing what I know now, I wouldn't spend money on this game.
