5The Big Box Expansion for Galaxy Trucker  Jul 04, 2009 By Robert Lyon

Galaxy Trucker Big Expansion

A Solid Addition to a Great Game

I'm a fan of expansions, I'll say that up front. If I like a game, I look forward to its expansions. If that expansion is highly touted, with elements that broaden, expand, deepen, perhaps fix, the base game (if need be), I anticipate it all the more. Some expansions deliver, of course, some don't. Some you plug right in to the base game, others you pick and choose from like a buffet in a Chinese restaurant. Galaxy Trucker the BBG Expansion has a heck of a lot to offer, and delivers on the things I like best:

There are new cards, although the card element is not where the great variety in Galaxy Trucker resides. That said, there are a fair amount of new cards in the expansion that do a variety of things. Some increase the overall difficulty, some sharpen the challenge level, some are simply added to the stack of adventure cards. There is provision for a 5th player to the game, although by most reports, you're better off with no more than 4.

There are more new ship classes, and some tasty looking tin cans among them. But BEST OF ALL: more new SHIP COMPONENTS (the heart and soul of the game!) . . . LOTS more. Clever, integrative, producing increased capability (and complexity)

Consider:

Engine Boosters--Hyperdrive, baby!
Indestructible Plating - Imperviosity!
Reactor Furnace - A kind of alternative energy
Stasis Chambers - Cryogenics, for crying out loud
Luxury Cabins - Space palanquins
New Cyan Alien Options
Combi-tiles - greater functionality
Bi-directional Cannon--just that
Cannon booster--more wham for your bam!
Shield booster--like a one piece bathing suit: better coverage

All in all, there are six new subset expansions in the box. They can be added to the core game with discretion, like a good cook would create a stew. But frankly, if there were naught but those exciting new game components included in the box, I would buy it and call it money well spent!

5Galaxy Truckers The Big Expansion -- Get Ready for MAYHEM  Aug 28, 2009 By D. Katz
Galaxy Truckers itself is a challenging and dynamic game.

The big expansion takes the whole game and kicks it in the teeth with crazy new scenarios and even new tiles / ship parts / units.

We jumped right in and tried two expansions together. It was like a whole new game -- although a bit hard. I suggest starting with one expansion at a time.

1Not worth the money  Jan 07, 2012 By Lucinda Marie
The expansion adds some interesting new things, but nothing that really makes it much different. It combines some cards, adds a few aliens, and puts a few extra cards here and there, but the cards weren't the same size as the original cards. It means you pay $50 for some combined pieces and some cards that aren't compatible? Not really that impressed. The new ship layouts were nice, but not $50 nice. We pulled most of the new pieces out and all of the cards out.

1Plan on paying more once you open the box...  Jan 07, 2012 By Bryan Lemke
Wow. This game used to be a favorite of mine, then we bought the expansion. As mentioned previously by Marie, the cards for the expansion aren't the same size as the original game. It means that if you DO integrate it into the game, the expansion cards are larger and you always know when they're going to be drawn. When I contacted Rio Grande Games about this, they said that they were aware of the problem and were offering a free upgrade kit to fix it - if you paid $10 for shipping. I went back and forth with a gentleman from Rio Grande about making a customer pay for shipping to cover a manufacturing error, and got this response from the company and forwarded from Rio Grande Games:

"So for upgrade kits for Galaxy Trucker was made because we had to change printer from first edition of Galaxy Trucker (with very poor quality). With new printer we got paper with linen finish, a bit different dimensions of cards and we also made more safe rockets figures for player. If someone has first edition of Galaxy Trucker, it is absolutely playable, there is no problem in game itself.

"Once this person buys expansion, things are not as good as they should be. It is still playable without big problems, but if you really want, you can recognize tiles from base game from tiles from expansion (because they have different paper). You can recognize cards from base game and expansion (very small difference in size). Because of these problems we decided that we will do these upgrade kits, we made them and we are not asking our customers for paying for them. The only thing we are asking our customers is shipping. I think this is more than fair, because without this upgrade game is still playable without any problem and once customer receives this upgrade, it will improve his copy of the game (new cards and new tiles instead of used ones)."

So...if I buy the expansion, I can get what I was promised on the outside of the box if I pay $10 more? I can't understand why Czech Games is requiring customers to pay $10 to fix a manufacturing error on their part, and I can't understand why Rio Grande is supporting that decision. We didn't lose the pieces, we didn't wear them out, we just opened the box and found pieces that were different than what was promised. It'd be like purchasing a DVD and opening it to find a scratched DVD that skipped every few minutes...still technically playable but not what you paid a good bit of money for. Offering a replacement DVD for $10 shipping seems asinine and unethical when THE ORIGINAL PRODUCT YOU BOUGHT WAS NEVER DELIVERED AS PROMISED ON THE PACKAGING.

With all of that, and with the game not completely playable from the moment the box was opened, I can only give it one star. The manufacturer is aware of the error and still expects the customer to pay to fix their blunder. Ouch. The customer service was disappointing as well and the official stance of the producer here makes a good deterrent for future games from Rio Grande.

Bottom line? The game has been shelved and future Rio Grande purchases cancelled because I thought an extra $10 to get something I already paid full price for was silly.

4Great Expansion for a Great Game...but...  Jan 07, 2011 By Marximus
List price of $83.28?! Really? Where? Is this U.S. dollars? Yen? Pesos? This expansion retails for $54.95 and can be found for about $35 at various online stores. The "discount" price on Amazon is thus very misleading and, unfortunately, is an all too common practice on this site.
